Setting the Scene
BAAM, the annual Beachside Art Market, is set to transform the iconic Bottle Alley on Hastings’ seafront into a showcase for the best in fine art. This year’s event promises to be an unforgettable experience, with 70 talented artists, ranging from local newcomers to national figures, showcasing their work along the 480-metre-long walkway.
Artist Lineup
The lineup includes a diverse range of artists, such as:
- BAAM’s very own 12-year-old artist, who will be exhibiting their work alongside other talented artists
- A Ukrainian artist whose work will be represented by his family due to unforeseen circumstances
- Xinchu Zhang, a renowned portrait artist, who will offer live sit-down portraits
- Local artists Jude Montague and Caroline Gregory, who will be performing live
The Unique Atmosphere
The event promises to be a celebration of fine art in a unique and relaxed atmosphere. The north glass wall of the alley will be transformed into a linear gallery, with a stunning view of the beach. Visitors will be able to wander along the walkway and discover a variety of art pieces, including:
- Portraits and figurative art by Xinchu Zhang
- Pop-up performances by Jude Montague and Caroline Gregory
- Spontaneous DJ performances by Simon and the Pope
- A special installation of fabrics and flags by Mew Welch, David Harris, and Zeroh
Heritage and Community
The event will also celebrate the heritage of the space. Local historian and academic researcher Andre Palfrey-Martin will be on hand to answer questions about the history of the space. The ‘Last Bastion’ area will be a hub of live music and DJ performances, featuring a mix of drum, bass and vocal performances.
The Organisers
BAAM is the brainchild of Zeroh, Daniel Hardiker, and Neil Hetherington, who have been creating installations and artworks in Bottle Alley since 2015. The duo has just completed a two-year residency in the space, where they founded the Bottle Alley Art Market and created a community lightshow to music event.
A Celebration of Fine Art
BAAM is not just an art fair; it is a celebration of fine art and contemporary practice in a relaxed, inclusive atmosphere. The event encourages the public to engage with the art world, and with over 12,000 visitors last year, it has proven to be a successful initiative. The market is supported by Gina Hewitt, an independent operations consultant and project/event manager with 20 years of experience in live events and creative projects.
A Unique Art-Buying Spectacle
With its unique setting and vibrant atmosphere, BAAM offers a unique art-buying spectacle while supporting the local creative economy. Bottle Alley, constructed between November 1933 and May 1934 by ‘concrete king’ Sidney Little, has served as a backdrop for various films and TV series, including Channel 4 series Close to Me, Is Anybody There? starring Michael Caine, and the Netflix/BBC drama Girl/Haji.
The Future of BAAM
As the event continues to grow and evolve, it remains committed to supporting the local creative economy. With its unique blend of fine art, music, and community engagement, BAAM is an event that will continue to delight and inspire audiences for years to come.
“The Beachside Art Market is a celebration of the creative economy, and it’s an incredible platform for local artists to showcase their work.
