Portland and Willamette are set to bloom with the annual exhibitions honoring Bachelors and Masters of Fine Arts from Pacific Northwest College of Art (PNCA) and Portland State University (PSU). The PNCA showcases, taking place on Thursday, May 1 across three locations, will close on May 18. PSU’s shows, meanwhile, will open two weeks later, on Thursday, May 15, and run to Saturday, June 7.
A Showcase of Talent
PNCA’s BFA and MFA showcases feature 15 MFA candidates in visual studies and print media, respectively. This year, PSU is displaying twice the number of MFA candidates, with two candidates set to graduate from the MFA program, provided they successfully complete their thesis defenses.
Meet the MFA Candidates
* Manfred Alexander Parrales Aburto and Midori Yamanaka from PSU’s School of Art and Social Practice
* Both artists spent time as artists in residence at Lloyd Center last year
* Parrales Aburto studies the role of art in communication technology
* Yamanaka focuses on the interpersonal connections art grows between people
* Mai Ide from PNCA’s visual studies program
* An accomplished creative with a decade of experience as a materials designer in Japan
* Her exhibition at the Littman Gallery showcased her work on racist microaggressions and the Japanese woman’s image
* She has since worked on a series of deconstructed corsets to explore the undergarment’s purpose and fetishization
* Ebony Frison from PNCA’s print media MFA program
* Perfecting her practice of photogravure, a labor-intensive technique for printmaking
* Inspired by her heritage, she is working to create unique images and ideas
The Artistic Journeys
PNCA’s MFA candidates have been working on their thesis for years, meeting with advisors and peers dozens of times. For them, the thesis defense is an opportunity to shine and share their work with the world. “It’s kind of a metaphor or layering the idea of reclaiming the image or stereotype of the Japanese woman.” This quote from Mai Ide sums up her artistic vision, which is to create a unique and interesting image or idea of the commodification of Asian culture without honoring or respecting Japanese culture or traditions. “I feel like I’m constantly living this dream that he had for us.” Ebony Frison expresses her feelings of fulfillment, as she continues to work towards creating images inspired by her heritage.
Exhibitions and Locations
PNCA’s BFA and MFA showcases take place across three locations, with complimentary shuttle service available between them on First Thursday. PSU’s shows, meanwhile, will be held at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art at PSU, with the opening on Thursday, May 15 and the closing on Saturday, June 7.
