The Art of Connection
As a former club kid, Rachel Johnson has seen firsthand the transformative power of art. Growing up in the 1990s, she was part of the vibrant Eastside Boys and Girls Club scene, where creativity and self-expression were encouraged. Now, as the club’s art director, Johnson is determined to share that same passion with a new generation of young people.
The Power of Art in the Community
Art has the ability to bring people together like few other things can. It provides a common language that transcends age, culture, and socioeconomic status. At the Eastside Boys and Girls Club, Johnson is using art to connect with her students in a way that feels authentic and meaningful. By providing a space for students to express themselves creatively, Johnson is helping them to develop a sense of identity and self-worth. Through art, students are able to communicate their thoughts and feelings in a way that is both personal and universal. By sharing their art with others, students are building confidence and developing a sense of community.
The Importance of Mentorship
As a former club kid, Johnson knows the importance of mentorship in helping young people to develop their artistic skills. She is committed to providing one-on-one guidance and support to her students, helping them to explore their creativity and find their unique voice. By working closely with each student, Johnson is able to tailor her instruction to meet their individual needs and interests. Through regular feedback and encouragement, Johnson is helping her students to build confidence and develop a growth mindset.
The new facility has a larger capacity and more amenities, including a gym, a swimming pool, and a basketball court. Johnson said the new facility is more than just a place for kids to play, but a place where they can learn and grow.
