ArtLien publishes calculators and written guides for artists — canvas proportions, colour palettes, golden-ratio composition, project time estimates, and the arithmetic behind commission and gallery pricing. Everything here is educational. It is written to help you think about a decision, not to make the decision for you.

The calculators are estimates

Every tool on this site is a model, and every model leaves things out. A time estimate cannot know how a particular piece will go. A commission or gallery calculation reflects the figures you enter and the conventions we describe, not the terms of any contract you have signed. A colour palette is a starting point, not a judgement about your work.

Treat the numbers as a floor to think from and check them against your own records. Where a figure would commit you to money or a deadline, confirm it against the actual agreement in front of you.

Nothing on ArtLien is legal, financial, tax, or business advice. Pricing your work, signing a gallery or commission agreement, and handling the tax on what you earn are all matters where the right answer depends on where you live and on the specific terms involved. For those, consult a qualified professional in your own jurisdiction.

Materials and safety

Where our articles mention materials, solvents, mediums, or techniques, they describe general practice and not a safety procedure. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and safety data sheet for any product you use, ventilate your workspace appropriately, and take the precautions the product itself specifies. Nothing written here overrides them.

Art history and the museum section

Our historical and reference material draws on publicly available sources, including Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons, and is presented for general interest. Attributions, dates, and provenance in art history are frequently revised, and we cannot warrant that every detail reflects the current scholarly position.
